March 31, 2010 MAUNDY THURSDAY JOINT WORSHIP is Thursday, April 1st at 7:30 P.M. with combined Chancel Choirs, the service of Holy Communion, and the Office of Tenebrae, which is an early 4th century adaptation of Good Friday service. The Latin word tenebrae means "shadows." This solemn service of scripture and song is a ceremony which progresses from light to dark, symbolizing the betrayal, denial and flight of the disciples as Jesus goes to the cross alone. The word maundy is the English form of the Latin word meaning "commandment." The Thursday of Holy Week is called Maundy Thursday because in the Gospel of John's account on this evening Jesus teaches his disciples the new commandment, "that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another." (John 13:34) Please join us for this important evening of Holy Week. Nursery care will be provided.
GOOD FRIDAY The Great Falls Ministerial Association is sponsoring an ecumenical worship service on Friday, April 2 at 12:00 P.M. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church (1326 1st Avenue N). . SUNDAY SCHOOL NEWS & ROOM PICK UPHAPPY EASTER! This Sunday the children will begin in worship and then go to Room 4 for a Sunday Special with Bonnie Warren and Heather Lucero. They will begin making cards and decorating pots for the plants that have grown from the seeds they planted a few weeks ago. They will hear an Easter story while the "Easter bunnies" (middle school students) are hiding the eggs outside, weather permitting. When all is ready, the younger children will go out for an Easter egg hunt! They will then return to Room 4 to finish their pots and stories.
A quote from Rev. Jim Petersen's sermon last week: "There is a word of hope in here for us in this Palm Sunday story in Luke. It says that if we find ourselves unappreciated, rebuked and rejected, relegated to the outskirts, because we are trying to do the right thing, because we are trying to be a peacemaker, because we are trying to apply the teachings of Jesus to this old, cynical world of ruptured relationships, don't get discouraged. Do not get discouraged. This is the message. God can use what we do from where we are and who we are. So don't be disappointed if we are not at the center of power, or attention, or popularity, or financial reward. For, listen to this, even God's own Son had to work from the outskirts. And look what he accomplished."
REV. JIM'S BIBLE STUDY will meet on Wednesday, April 7 at 12:00 P.M. for Chapter 13 in your study guide, Riots and Encouragement. This will be repeated on Sunday, April 11 at 9:30 A.M.
